IKARIA - A SPECIAL DESTINATION
Ikaria, the island of Icarus is one of the largest islands in the eastern Aegean and is an ideal vacation spot for all ages. It is known for the longevity of its inhabitants and is one of the 5 parts of the world that are among the areas with the highest life expectancy. In Ikaria there is a special way of life since the locals have eliminated the stress and all things are done slowly. The capital of the island is Agios Kirikos in the southeast, while Evdilos in the north is the second port. Cliffs, green slopes, gorges of exceptional beauty such as the river Halaris, but also natural landscapes, such as the forest of Randi, are some of the characteristics of the island. Ikaria is known as a place of exile, where people of the royal family and other prominent people dangerous to the throne were exiled, as well as political prisoners.
The villages of Agios Kirikos, Evdilos, Gialiskari, Karkinagri with the lighthouse of Kavo Papa and the mountain village of Christos Rachon maintain a special note of folk architecture. In Agios Kirikos there is the archeological museum of the island with its unique exhibits. Nas, the most important port in antiquity, was dedicated to Artemis. Oinoi, the ancient capital of the island, Drakano with the ancient city in the area of Fanari, the ancient castle and the Tower of Drakanos, the Castle of Koskinas, which was a fortress of the Byzantine era are the most important monuments of the island. The rock of Ikaros is located in the village of Chrysostomos, near Agios Kirikos. According to mythology, at that point Icarus lost his wings and fell into the sea. The Ancient city of Drakanos, with the homonymous Acropolis and the Tower, are located in the present area of Faros, east of the island.
Therma, with its thermal springs and radioactive waters, is visited by many tourists especially for the treatment of rheumatism. Other thermal springs are the source of Mustafa - Litza, those of the Cave of Pamphilus, Kratsa, Artemis and Apollo, as well as the source of Agia Kyriaki. One of the most popular beaches on the north side of the island Armenistis is located in a very tourist resort. East of the island is the beach of Ai Giorgis relatively deserted and not very well known to visitors to the island. Next to the port of Agios Kirikos, it is a rocky beach ideal for anyone who wants easy and quick access from the center. On the road to the lighthouse, east of Therma, is the beach Anefanti. It is located between the beaches of Kerame and Nyfi.
Avlaki is one of the many beautiful beaches of the island, located on the north side, near the village of Avlaki. Gialos, also located next to the port of the village of Magganiti with fishing boats is a remarkable destination. On the road to the Lighthouse, east of Therma, is the medium-sized beach Glyfadi. The sandy beach of Therma is located below the main square of the village next to the port of the settlement. Kyparissi is one of the beautiful beaches of the island, on the north side, near Evdilos, next to Kerame. An exotic beach is the Seychelles, in the village of Magganitis, with crystal clear waters and white granite rocks. The bay of Na is one of the most beautiful natural beaches of the island. Fyrodi is the oldest and most well-known beach in the village of Magganitis.
The local products of Ikaria are mainly based on livestock, agriculture and fisheries. The famous products of the island are wine, honey, cheese, meat, oil, olives, chestnuts and Turkish delights, while in the local gastronomy there are fresh seafood, pastries, pasta and spirits. Karyotiko wine is the product of an ancient recipe that was kept and saved in jars buried in the ground and officially has the identity of its special physiognomy. Famous food of Ikaria is the "Sufiko", oily summer food, suitable for vegetarians. Zucchini meatballs and chickpea meatballs are also very famous delicacies, which are accompanied by the famous red wine of Ikaria, the "Pramneio Wine". A traditional dish is the wedding pilaf, which is served at weddings with a local goat, boiled or grilled. In all parts of Ikaria you will find goat, pork, beef and chicken. Spoon sweets have a special place in the domestic and foreign markets with the rose being the most famous with the special taste and smell of the rose. Ikaria honey is considered one of the best in our country which stands out for its excellent quality and unique taste as it is produced from pine trees and various varieties of aromatic plants.
