NAXOS - PRIMITIVE GRANDEUR

Naxos is the largest island of the Cyclades but apart from the idyllic beaches it has wild mountains, medieval castles, historical monuments and Byzantine churches. In front of the port, is the island with the unusual in the whole Aegean monument, the huge door, named as "Portara". It is a large, marble gate on the islet of Palatia, which today joins the Town of Naxos and is what is left of the temple of Apollo. One of the most beautiful and most traditional villages of Naxos is Potamia which consists of four settlements: Apano Potamia, Mesaia Potamia, Kato Potamia and Lierado.

Kouros of Apollo is located at the entrance of an old quarry very close to the entrance of the village of Apollo, 50 km from Chora. The imposing tower of Agia (12 km from Faneromeni), is a monument of the 17th century. The Kouros of the Blacks that was made around 570 BC. is located in the area of Flerio outside the village of Melanes and is one of the most characteristic samples of Naxian art. The Tower of Frangopoulos Della Roka in Kourounochori is one of the oldest towers in Naxos consists of three floors and defensive fortifications such as defensive ramparts,scalding, cages and dates from the 14th century.

The old tower of Plaka is located between the village of Tripodes and the beach of Plaka and was an observatory from which pirates were notified of the arrival. The village of Tripodes or Vivlos is one of the most picturesque villages of Naxos in the passage to the beaches of Kastraki, Alyko, Pyrgaki Mikri Vigla and Orko and belongs to Livadochoria. In the village of Filoti there is another Venetian tower, which is characterized by the beautiful marble fountain. The tower is in the center of the village, you can visit it and in its courtyard you will see a watermill. Halki is a very beautiful and fertile village that stands out for the architecture of its houses.

Mikri Vigla is an international meeting place for windsurf and kitesurf lovers - a similar and increasingly popular sport. Agios Georgios is the most popular and busy beach of Chora with a shallow sandy beach, protected from the winds. The beach of Agios Prokopis has sand and crystal clear waters while the visitor has the opportunity for water sports. The endless sandy beach of Agia Anna is a continuation of the beach of Agios Prokopis with the characteristic forest with the rare cedars that grow in the sand. Parthenos beach has been established as a meeting place for windsurfing friends from all over the world.

Locally recognized product is the Naxian potato, whose history dates back to the 19th century. From the local meats stand out the pork roast, the pork fricassee with lambs, the wine rooster, the rabbit with lemon, the goat, the boiled zula, the "monk", the braised veal. Due to the livestock on the island, the Naxian cheeses, the gruyere, the kefalotyri, the xynotyro and the xynomyzithra stand out. The famous local citrus liqueur is made from the aromatic leaves of citrus with family recipes. For dessert you should try dark, walnut pie with a small amount of citrus, served with ice cream and sheep's milk. The spoon sweets are based on citrus fruits produced on the island such as orange, lemon, frapa and quince, pumpkin, wild apple, watermelon, apricot, pear, grape, eggplant, peach, sour cherry, and even banana-kiwi.
