FOKIDA - ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE OF WORLD RENOWN
The prefecture of Fokida is located in central of Sterea Ellada(Central Greece called by Greeks as Sterea Ellada)with its capital the historic city of Amfissa which is bathed by the waters of the Corinthian Gulf. The landscape is characterized by intense alternations, created by the mountains Giona, Parnassos, Vardousia and Oiti. It was famous for the most important oracle of antiquity, the oracle of Delphi designated by UNESCO as a "World Heritage Site" located in Delphi. It also had the greatest contribution to the Revolution of 1821 with the fighters Athanasios Diakos, Odysseas Androutsos, Panourgia, Giannis Diovouniotis, Makrygiannis and others. The close distance of Fokida from Athens, the great historical monuments, the wonderful beaches of the Corinthian Gulf, the remarkable tourist infrastructures and the picturesque settlements make it an important tourist resort.
The capital of the prefecture, Amfissa, is built at the foothill of of Elatos mountain which is a commercial and economic center with a traditional color. A trademark is the famous Eleonas, one of the largest in the world,protected by the Natura 2000 network. The Castle of Amfissa, Built on a steep cliff, just above the town, became a refuge for its residents whenever they wanted to be protected from all sorts of besiegers.The Castle of Amfissa is also known as the "Castle of Oria", that is, Oraia , i.e. of the Beautiful . The gorge of Rekkas is the largest gorge of Giona, a landscape of incomparable beauty ideal for hiking, one of the most important in the country. In the center of the city dominates the Metropolitan Church of Evangelistria with the early Christian Baptistery of the 3rd - 4th century, the mosaics, and the frescoes of Spyros Papaloukas. The Archaeological Museum of Amfissa has exhibits from the Bronze Age to Roman times, and a remarkable coin collection.
Delphi is the ancient city, the navel of the earth in which the most important oracle of the ancient Greek world operated, the famous "Oracle of Delphi" in the valley of the river Pleistos. The precinct is recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site and pole of attraction all year round. At the Archaeological Museum of Delphi, there are exhibits from the famous Delphic oracle. The Ancient Theater near the sanctuary of Apollo is a monument of world cultural heritage. In ancient times, the theater's reputation was similar to that of the ancient stadium of Olympia, which hosted the Pythian Games. Castalia, in the ravine of Phaedriades, was the sacred spring of Delphi in the waters of which Pythia and the priests cleansed themselves before the oracle-giving process and the faithful to be purified. The temple of Athena Pronea with the famous Dome, in the sanctuary of Athena Pronea is the most photographed monument, a symbol of Delphi with a global scope.
Gravia with its famous Hani, which was given the historic battle in 1821 led by Odysseus Androutsos is ideal for winter getaways as it is close to the ski resort of Parnassos. In the middle of the village there is the bust of Odysseus Androutsos and the historic inn where through screens there is a representation of what took place there during that period. The Fairy Cave is a beautiful and unknown cave that according to tradition, was inhabited by the fairies of Parnassos, a cave full of lakes, stalactites and stalagmites. To the south is the Mining Park with the historic Vagonetto which testifies to the history of bauxite mining.
Parnassos is one of the most beautiful mountains in the country with the highest point being the Liakoura peak at 2,457m. which extends to the prefectures of Viotia, Fthiotida and Fokida. Parnassos Ski Center is on the list of the top ski resorts in the Balkans that attracts thousands of visitors due to its organized facilities. It has 19 pistes and 7 ski routes, 10 connective trails and three mini slopes for beginners with a total length of about 36 km. For adventure lovers, there are 12 off-piste routes while it is distinguished for the high levels of safety. From many parts of the ski resort you can see the Gulf of Corinth as well as the Euboean Gulf with new lifts.The coastal town of Itea with a state-of-the-art marina that quickly developed into a shopping center and played an important role since the Revolution of 1821. The sights of the city include the church of the "Metamorfosis of the Savior", of 1890. The rocky islets in gulf of Itea (Krissaios) that had been used as shelters during the early Byzantine centuries.
Galaxidi is an old commercial port, built on a natural double harbor, on the site of ancient Oianthi, a characterized traditional and preserved settlement. The picturesque port of Roumeli with mansions, captain's houses and beautiful beaches. In Galaxidi it is worth visiting the fishing village of Agioi Pantes which is built in a beautiful creek. Spilia a natural, vaulted cave inside a rock is located in Mama Square, at the central square of the beach of Galaxidi. The Museum houses exhibits mainly naval but also a collection of weapons from the Revolution of 1821 while the Folklore Museum is housed in the building of Mr. Angelis. The Naval and Historical Museum, housed in a building from 1868-1870, includes a collection of Galaxidi sailboats that left an era.
The mountainous Fokida is an ideal base for nature lovers with untouched villages that offer unique experiences full of traditions. Pentagioi, or Pentagiou is one of the oldest villages 80km from Amfissa. In the center of the village is the stone square with the impressive mountain peaks, the plane tree, the traditional cafe and the old primary school. Maria Pentagiotissa, the legendary woman of the area, was an outstanding beauty girl who was born in the village of Fokida, during the reign of Otto. The name was taken from her place of origin, Pentagiou. Lilaia is a beautiful traditional village with plenty of water, lush vegetation and traditional style. East and West of the village,there are the two Kefalovrysa, whose waters supply the Boeotian Kifissos. Lilaia has a theater, a market, baths and the sanctuaries of Apollo and Artemis with standing statues of Pentelic marble. Next to the village, Agorianitis rushes down, with whose waters the mills of the village were moving.
The local gastronomy is based on local production and is famous for its feta, honey, yogurt, olives, fish, its grilled,ravani and yogurt with honey. The olive tree has determined the character of Amfissa and is the main occupation and source of income. There are many cheese dairies shops in Vounichora, Penteoria, Amfissa, as well as in the mountains of the prefecture of Fokida which, in addition to feta,they prepare other dairy products such as milk, cheese, cheesebread and cheese which is strained yogurt with milk and feta and yogurt. The sweet of Galaxidi is the revani with its peculiar recipe, which contains rice that was baked in wood ovens. Because it is kept out of the fridge for a long time, it was the sweet that the sailors took with them on the ships. In Galaxidi they make both sweet almond and ravanaki, a different dessert that looks like the well-known ravani. The city of Desfina has a long tradition in the production of "rustic" type nuts, which are very famous in the area and are famous for the purity of the ingredients and their special taste.
