THESPROTIA - MOUNTAIN AND SEA
Thesprotia is one of the four remote prefectures of the region of Epirus that combines the unique beauties of the mountain with the beaches, from the deep blue Ionian. The capital of the prefecture is Igoumenitsa which is a popular tourist destination and an important seaport of the country to western Europe. Its port is connected with Patras, Paxos and Corfu but also with the ports of Italy, Bari, Brindisi, Angona and Venice. Thesprotia is famous for its beautiful beaches and crystal clear sea. Many important wetlands with rich flora and fauna are located near the rivers of the prefecture, Kalamas and the mythical Acheron.
Igoumenitsa is the natural port of Thesprotia and is an important seaport of the country to western Europe. It is an important economic and commercial center, with an interesting market while it has a remarkable and constantly evolving tourist development. It is also a cosmopolitan seaside town, built in the northern part of the prefecture, opposite Corfu. The castle protected the settlement of the Lygia peninsula, while parts of 5 meters high are preserved from the wall. The beaches of Drepano and Makrigialos, 7km. offer ideal holidays to guests who have been awarded "Blue Flags" in recent years.
Sivota with its incomparable natural beauty is reminiscent of something from the Norwegian Fjords, as they are built in a natural bay with many islands that offer a magnificent view. Agios Nikolaos, Mavro Oros, Mikro and Megalo Mourtemenio surround the picturesque bay. The story connects the islets in the bay of Sivota with the "Sivota islands'' mentioned by Thucydides, between which the naval battle of Corfu and Corinth took place during the Peloponnesian War. A trademark of the area are the beaches with their enchanting crystal clear waters while there are cosmopolitan fully organized beaches, but also less secular, almost deserted for those of you seeking solitude.
The beach of Mikri Ammos is outside the village in the direction of Perdika, right after the beach of Mega Ammos. Mega Ammos is a stunning pebble beach with turquoise clear waters, as well as many activities for water sports enthusiasts. It has turquoise waters which will offer you an unforgettable summer bath. The Pisina is a stunning beach located on the island of Agios Nikolaos. It is one of the most beautiful beaches in the area that is worth a visit with the clear blue waters and green vegetation. Zeri is a small picturesque beach, located northwest of Sivota just after the French and provides water sports and water slides for young and old.
The river Acheron is world famous from mythology where according to tradition, it had a divine origin and provoked the wrath of Zeus when he gave, during the Battle of Titan, water to the Titans to quench their thirst. It crosses the valley formed in the Western Continent in a narrow and imposing gorge formed by the mountains of Paramythia and Souli. The area known as the "Acheron Straits", with the landscape of special natural and ecological interest is an important wetland. The river is suitable for rafting at its exit from the straits near the village of Gliki, to its estuary. The areas have been proposed to join the pan-European network of protected areas.
Souli is undoubtedly the most historic area on a hill of 600 m. above Acheron built in high stony mountains offering a landscape of wild natural beauty. The ancient wells are located in the center of the area of Souli. It is also worth visiting the folklore collection, with local traditional costumes and historical objects while the traveler will be enchanted by its wild nature, and the busts of the heroes. Kougki Souliou is a fortress where the church of Agia Paraskevi is built, built in 1793, which is one of the most important historical areas. The mills of Souli are a beautiful location that in combination with the river that passes through there and the picturesque landscape,make it a site of unique beauty.
The mountainous Paramythia is a traditional settlement and offers many alternative tourism activities. Inside the town of Paramythia, it is worth visiting the castle of Agios Donatos, which was given this name by the patron saint of the area. The Koulia Tower of Paramythia, also known as the Koulia of Bonolata, built in a prominent place, ensured the ability of each owner to control the entire plain and the surrounding area. In the prefecture there are many archeological monuments, such as Ancient Gitani, Ancient Fanoti, and other finds of the Byzantine and post-Byzantine period which prove the important position of the area and its development since antiquity. Filiates is an ideal mountainous area surrounded by sights, traditional settlements, mountaineering routes and monasteries such as the Monastery of Giromeri.
The fishing village of Sagiada, is visited by tourists to enjoy the delicious fresh fish and the seaside Plataria is known for its excellent taverns and port. The mountainous Perdika perfectly combines mountain and sea and has wonderful beaches. In Chrysavgi with the running waters and the plane trees it is worth visiting the archeological site of Elea and the cave-hermitage of Agios Arsenios. To the south rises on a rocky hill the fortress of Margariti, an area rich in stone tools of the Middle Paleolithic period (Morfi, Mazarakia, etc.) which was one of the sites of Thesprotia, where prehistoric man lived. Agios Minas is one of the most wonderful sights of the prefecture of Thesprotia with the holy monastery built on a rock in a prominent position in the mountain village of Kokkinolithari Filiates.
The local products of the prefecture are many because of the flora of the area and are of exceptional quality. Some of them such as dairy products (milk, yogurt, galotyri, feta cheese, goat or sheep, kefalograviera, etc.), honey, olive oil, meat, citrus fruits and the very large production of fish. Ribs, mutton, lamb, goat, kokoretsi, fresh fish and flavors with influences from Italian cuisine are served in the prefecture. Typical are the traditional pies such as chicken pie, meat pie and rice pie, the sweets of the spoon, ravani, walnut pie and apple pie.
